Accessible websites for restaurants

ADA Compliance for Restaurants

Your website is part of your restaurant. If a guest cannot read the menu, book a table, or place an order because of a disability, that is a barrier under the Americans with Disabilities Act. We find those barriers, fix them, and keep them fixed.

Who this is for

Restaurant owners and operators who want their website, menu, online ordering, and reservations to work for every guest, including guests who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification, or captions. It is also for owners who have received a demand letter and need a clear, documented plan.

Why restaurants get targeted

Restaurant websites depend on a few high-traffic features: the menu, the order button, the reservation widget, the location finder. These are usually built by different vendors, updated often, and rarely tested with assistive technology. That combination makes them easy to find failures on, and food service is now one of the most frequently sued industries for digital accessibility.

What we do

Audit. We test every page and flow on your site, including third-party ordering and reservation platforms, against WCAG 2.1 AA and 2.2 AA. You get a prioritized report written in plain English: what is broken, who it affects, how serious it is, and how to fix it.

Fix. We remediate the site itself. Real text menus instead of PDFs, labeled buttons and forms, keyboard access, sufficient color contrast, captions, focus states, and correct page structure. If your site was built by someone else, we can work inside it or rebuild the parts that cannot be fixed.

Verify. Every fix is re-tested with automated tools, keyboard-only navigation, and screen readers. We document the results so you have evidence of conformance, not just a promise.

Maintain. Menus change, specials rotate, platforms update. We monitor your site and re-check after changes so it stays accessible after launch.

What usually breaks on restaurant websites

  • Menus published as PDFs or images that screen readers cannot read
  • Online ordering buttons and modals that cannot be reached with a keyboard
  • Reservation widgets with unlabeled fields and no error messages
  • Low contrast text over photos
  • Missing alt text on dish and location photos
  • Videos and reels without captions
  • Hours, phone, and address hidden inside images
  • Pop-ups and announcements that trap focus

The standard we work to

The Department of Justice has been clear that businesses open to the public must make their websites accessible, and it points to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines as the reference. We audit and fix to WCAG 2.1 level AA, the version most often cited in settlements and lawsuits, and we test against WCAG 2.2 AA so your site is ready for the next revision.

About overlays and widgets

Accessibility overlays promise compliance with one line of code. They do not change the underlying site, they frequently conflict with the assistive technology guests already use, and companies using them continue to be sued. We fix the code instead. It costs more than a widget and it actually works.

What you get

A documented audit, a remediated website, tested ordering and reservation flows, an accessibility statement for your site, short guidance for your staff on keeping menus and photos accessible, and a re-test schedule. If you would like, we also handle the ongoing monitoring.

Questions about ADA compliance for restaurants

Does the ADA really apply to a restaurant's website?

Yes. Title III of the ADA covers businesses open to the public, and the Department of Justice has said for years that this includes their websites. Restaurants are one of the most frequently sued categories because menus, ordering, and reservations are exactly the kind of features that break for people using assistive technology.

What standard do you fix the site to?

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, level AA. Courts and DOJ settlements consistently reference WCAG 2.1 AA, and we test against the newer WCAG 2.2 AA as well so the work holds up as the standard evolves.

We use a third-party ordering or reservation platform. Is that covered?

It is still your guest's experience, so we test those flows too. Some platforms are accessible out of the box, some can be configured, and some need to be swapped. We tell you which, and what it would take.

Can we just install an accessibility overlay or widget?

We do not recommend it. Overlays do not fix the underlying code, they can interfere with screen readers, and businesses using them are still being sued. Fixing the site itself is the only approach that actually removes barriers.

Our menu is a PDF. Is that a problem?

Usually, yes. Most PDF and image menus cannot be read by screen readers or resized on a phone. We convert menus into real, styled web pages that are easy for guests to read and easy for your staff to update.

How long does it take?

An audit typically takes one to two weeks. Remediation depends on the size of the site and how it was built. We give you a fixed scope and timeline after the audit, and we can prioritize the highest-risk issues first.

What if we already received a demand letter?

Contact us right away and loop in your attorney. We can produce a fast, documented audit and a remediation plan that shows good-faith progress, which is often what counsel needs first.

Most projects combine two or three of these. We will recommend the mix that fits.
